What's your city's livability score? If you're like millions of other homeowners across the nation, you may not know. But, if you're thinking of pulling up stakes and relocating for job, family, or retirement, now is the time to dig deeper. If you find yourself in search of your own happily-ever-after in Southeast Florida, make sure you have a good grasp of the area's livability.

What Is the Livability Index?

It seems everyone has their own version of a livability score. The American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) has one, and it's not just for retirees. Created with individuals and families of all ages in mind, the AARP version is based on a decade of research and includes every state in the nation.

Livability scores, as calculated by the AARP, are based upon seven main categories:

  • Housing
  • Neighborhood
  • Transportation
  • Environment
  • Health
  • Engagement
  • Opportunity
  • Across these categories, 40 different metrics are measured, including factors such as crime rates and job opportunities. Want to know whether the town you're considering has access to green spaces and libraries? It's in the livability index. Civic involvement and sense of community among residents are factors, as well. Towns are measured on a scale of 1 to 100, and the higher the score, the more livable the area. AARP's livability index is a prime tool for realtors, as well as the buyers and sellers they serve. Several cities in Southeast Florida boast above-average livability scores, including two of the most popular:

    Fort Lauderdale -- Score 53

Featuring all the luxury condos of Miami without the high rental and purchase prices, Fort Lauderdale has much to offer everyone who moves here, regardless of age. You'll be close to everything if you make the move to Fort Lauderdale, including beaches and green spaces. This area garnered whopping livability scores of 62 for neighborhood quality and 60 for accessibility to housing.

    Miami -- Score 52

Miami, Florida scored a high 68 in safe and easy transportation options and a second 68 in quality neighborhoods. Access to parks and jobs is readily available in Miami, and there's a bustling metro area that offers nearly everything a resident could want. Nightlife, medical centers and waterfront access are only a few of the amenities Miami has to offer those looking to relocate.

Livability is all about quality of life, and quality of life determines happiness. When it's time to relocate to Southeast Florida, don't be wowed by the miles of scenic shoreline or the hours upon hours of bright, summer sunshine. Come for the opportunities and the amenities. Settle down among community-minded neighbors. Find your niche next to a park or a public garden. Southeast Florida has tons to offer. Come see for yourself what livability is all about.
